I bought this for my boyfriend who is an avid reader and he loved it so much that I had to buy one for myself a week later.
I love the way you can change font size! Now I can get cozy and read without my evil reading glasses! A couple more font sizes would be nice but it's good with the 3 available at present.
I'm kind of a clutz and I was thrilled with how sturdy this product is! I haven't dropped it yet but I think it would take it. We went to [...] and bought covers and lights and those were great additions to a great product. The cover makes it even easier to hold onto and the light is wonderful! Zero glare!
I had read all the reviews and therefore didn't even install the software that comes with this reader. (we're using calibre and couldn't be happier)
One of the best things about this product is that we may never have to buy (or assemble!) another bookcase again! -- such a great gift I had to buy one for myself!
I was on the fence about getting an e-reader for a long time; like many reviewers, I was torn between the different products out there, wondering which one would be best for me, or if I really even needed an e-reader at all. I don't travel much; I work from home; and I already have quite a stack of unread "real" books in my house which could keep me busy for quite a while. I finally decided to get one based on the fact that I do have two kids and I fairly frequently find myself waiting for them in various places, and being annoyed that I'd forgotten my current book at home. I figured that at minimum, I could keep an e-reader in my bag and always have something available to read.
I've had this reader for about a week and am surprised to find that I'm actually reading with it quite often at home as well as when I'm out. This reader seems to really be the best fit for my situation and needs. I find the downloading process very easy and have had no problems with the Sony store; I've also downloaded several free books from Project Gutenberg and found it easy to transfer them to the reader. I did also try downloading some free books from Google Books, but noticed that the books I was familiar with, like Pride and Prejudice, had several typos in the versions I got from Google. Maybe I just picked the wrong ones, but I deleted them and got the Gutenberg versions instead, and so far they have been error-free.
I find the Reader itself easy to use and operate; the controls are simple to figure out and I really barely had to consult the user manual at all (there's a bare-bones one that comes in the package, and a somewhat more detailed one that you can download.) I have no problem with the page-turning control being near the bottom. I am sometimes tripped up by the fact that the control in the center looks very much like an iPod wheel; I keep wanting to turn it to, say, change pages, which it doesn't do.
It is true that the pages flash momentarily when you "turn" them; I found this a bit strange at first, but quickly got used to it. In some ways I find it easier to concentrate when reading a book on the Reader, as I'm not distracted by, say, the author's photo on the back cover, blurbs in the front, etc. I seem to be spending more time reading since I've gotten the Reader and I like being able to switch back and forth between books without even getting up!
The only real "cons" I can give for the Reader so far are: 1) I find it a bit heavier than I expected; while it is in fact about the size of a paperback book, I'd say it's more the weight of a standard hardcover book. And with the cover on (I got the Sony "leather" cover, which I do like because it makes it easier to hold it like a real book), it becomes even more weighty and takes up more room in my bag; 2) The gray-type-on-gray-background is something I'm still getting used to; it is fine in bright reading light or outside, but in dim reading conditions, even if I increase the font, I keep wishing the background were more like a white book page. I have tried a clip-on light but have not been able to find a good way to position it so it doesn't create glare on the screen (which otherwise is almost glare-free); I may try one of the covers with the built-in lights; and 3) so far I am disappointed in the selection of books I can find in the e-reader format from my local library, but this isn't really a fault of the Reader, and is probably more of a reflection of either my taste in reading or my library's selection. But it might be something to check out first if you are hoping to borrow a large number of e-books from your library. -- Pleased so far
This is an easy on the eyes e-reader. The sony software to transfer e-books doesn't work on linux or windows 7 too easily. The time to transfer PDFs takes a little time but impatience aside a good product. -- Excellent E-Reader
I am very happy with this Sony PRS300BC reader. It is one of the most useful purchases I've made lately. With the 3 font sizes it is easy to read. I have yet to buy any books, instead I've downloaded many, many of the (free) old classics. Books that I haven't read since I was a kid. I take it with me anywhere I may have a few minutes to wait, (doctor's offices, Etc). It's always there and always ready to enertain me. The newer ones have many more features, but for the money, this one can't be beat. -- Top Quality
I just turn it on for test purposes and I have read a few pages from a previously loaded book.
It was very comfortable to read.
I didnt try to read outside the house, load a book or connect it to the laptop.
But I am thinking to buy one for me.
-- I gave it as a gift
